Promoting access to education for Children with Disabilities in Kenya

Since 2017, Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya has been implementing support of special education and inclusive education, care-giver services, rehabilitation and nutrition to empower the basic right of children with disabilities, and this project has been being sponsored by KOICA(Korea International Cooperation Agency). These interventions improved healthy of children with disabilities and consequently seven more children with severe disabilities could enroll in the school. Thus, as of right now, total 42 out of 65 children with disabilities can access to education. 


The seven children with physical and mental disabilities such as paraplegia, hemiplegia, and autism have improved their physical function through physical rehabilitation and language rehabilitation over the past two years, and finally could get permission of enrollment in the school.

Among them, Dickson who had paraplegia caused by cerebral palsy had difficulty moving around and thus couldn’t help staying in the room. So Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya implemented a barrier-free project for his residential environment such as flattening the floor and installing parallel bar. These renovations let him increase the rage of activities of daily living(ADL) and significantly improved his leg muscle strength. after 2 years, he can walk to school by himself even without assistive walker.

We also would like to introduce the other case. His name is Hillary and he also has the same experience with Dickson. When staff members of Miral Welfare Foundation Kenya visited his school, he ran out of the classroom and welcomed with smile. Barrier-free support bring him positive change in all parts of his daily life.

Another good news came to us. It was the news about Richard, one of beneficiaries in the project. His teacher told us that he had excellent grades compared to non-disabled children and he was very close to his friends.


Children with disabilities who go to school say that they have a chance to become good member in the community they live and realize that they are worthy the same as other friends who don’t have disabilities. We will keep doing our best for making more stories like above mentioned children with disabilities in Kenya, so please keep your attention on our steps.
